Sustainable Steel makes ambitious projects possible

Steelmakers and fabricators across North America are looking to solve the sustainability puzzle: how to hit ambitious embodied carbon targets in new and upcoming mega-projects. In the case of the recently completed construction of a new customer distribution centre in Hamilton, stringent carbon requirements required some out-of-the-box thinking.

Steel fabricator Canam turned to new XCarb® steel from ArcelorMittal Dofasco, supplementing their steel sources with the sustainable steel. In this video, watch how Canam came to that decision, and the effect that XCarb® had not only on this one project, but on the company (and, maybe, the steelmaking industry) as a whole.

"In today’s age, there’s a higher emphasis on needing a sustainable solution. And that sustainable solution is still XCarb® —produced off our electric arc furnace."
- Marcia Stinson, General Manager Construction Sales, ArcelorMittal Dofasco

“We’re seeing it as a really important part of our sustainable journey at Canam.

I feel like we can influence the industry. We feel like we can have an impact on the wellbeing of the workers. We can have an impact on the city, or the village, or where the business occurs. That’s something we can be proud of, and I hope it’s going to continue in that for the future.”

Sébastien Beaulieu
Sustainability Advisor, Canam

“I think this project really demonstrates and serves as a showcase project. And, really, it’s a proof of concept. On this project in particular, XCarb® was a very good fit. And the most important thing to understand about XCarb® is that it is the exact same thing as conventional steel. The only difference is how that steel ended up getting made.”
